The Purpose
of this program is to train critical care nurses in end of life and
palliative
care through a comprehensive program that has been successfully
utilized
throughout the
The attendees
will
become ELNEC Trainers who are
encouraged to educate other health care professionals in palliative
care and
end of life.
9 lecture
modules
will be presented along with corresponding interactive breakout
sessions.
Additional content has been added to the basic 18 hour program.
1. Compare and contrast Palliative Care, Hospice Care,
and their place in the critical care setting
2. Define the core precepts of palliative care:
Symptom
Management, Difficult Conversations (including defining &
supporting the
patient’s goals) and Quality of Life in the critical care setting
3.
Describe palliative care principles as they apply to the critical care
practice
setting that include:
Crtiical
Care Nursing, Pain Management,
Symptom management, Communication,
Ethical/Legal
issues, Loss, Grief &
Bereavement, Achieving Quality Care,
Cultural
Considerations, and The Final
Hours
4. Demonstrate teaching tools that can be used to
teach
palliative care in the critical care practice setting

educational program administered by City of Hope National Medical
Center (COH)
and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) designed to
